Durian Season

Most durians sold in Singapore are from Malaysia, follow by Thailand, with some from Indonesia.  So the saying, durians are available all year round, is quite true.

Malaysia Durian Season

Season is affected by several factors, including weather.  So the months mentioned above is only an indication.

This occurs twice a year.  Mid year season starts sometime in May, and can last till August.  Year end season starts in late November and tends to last till February.

Why the wide range of months per season?  Big harvest usually occurs over a period of 2-4 weeks only.  However, the early fallings, are either from scattered flowers (before 1st flowering), while some trees tends to flower multiple times for a single season, thus sometimes durian sellers may mention 1st flowering, 2nd flowering, etc.

Thailand Durian Season

Thailand durians tends to be less pungent as it is harvested from the tree.  Durians are cut when it is almost ripe, so it can withstand the extra hours or even a couple of days transit.

Thailand is known for their agriculture technology.  They are able to produce and control production.  Thus Thailand durian harvest are human controlled.  Thailand durian season usually starts before Malaysia durians, or perhaps I should say, in-between periods.

Example.  Thailand durians are usually available between February to May, and September to November.  It is still available during Malaysia durian season, but not as common in Singapore when the Malaysia durians are in supply.

Thailand durians can be nice too.  If you are lucky, sometimes you get really awesome Thai durians.

Indonesia Durian Season

I am unable to comment much as I have never tried Indonesia durians nor observe the seasons.

I once heard from durian sellers, that Indonesia durians are brought in before Malaysia durians are available.  This is because Indonesia durians does have that pungent-ness that Singaporeans are accustomed with, but was told the taste is different from Malaysia durians.  Since I have never ate it before, it will be inaccurate or unfair of me to comment further.
