Some people swear by Malaysia Durians, and shun Thai durian completely. However, there are many who end up eating Thai durians without knowing, since some are quite close resemblance and to an untrained eye and taste bud, it is hard to distinguish Thai durians from Malaysia durians.
Why are Thai durians less pungent? I don't know if I am right here, but my wild guess is, these are harvested durians, thus since it doesn't reach full term, the pungent smell is not emitted.
Like their saying, only rotten fruits falls from the tree, thus they harvest. They are not wrong are they? :D So if you live near a durian plantation in Thailand, you may be able to get free (or cheap) 'rotten' thai durians that falls off the tree.
'Rotten' durians as the word suggest, will be over riped, and starting to smell too strongly.
Harvesting of Thailand durians takes place before they are fully ripe (else it will just fall off). Durians are cut off the tree, packed and distributed to many parts of the world. These durians doesn't come with a strong smell (sometimes doesn't even smell at all) thus can be sent overseas easily.
Those distributed in Singapore, arrives by land (trucks). These durians will ripen over the couple of days, from harvest to transportation (to Singapore). Most of the durians will reach shops on Day 3 or 4, and are ready for consumption.
