Tai Yuen (Some sellers calls it Black Pearl just as a fancy name)

I was first introduced to this durian sometime in year 2001/2 by a rather trustworthy Malaysian durian man, who goes about in his old car, going to a few of his regular carparks.  However, this man disappeared after around 2004.  Maybe he decided he made enough.

Ok, this isn't a very common durian variety.  Yet, it is worth every effort to write on it.

Visual
The thorns are slightly small and quite neatly packed side by side.  I am not familar how to identify the exterior looks though.  Inside, if you notice, there is this 'sim' (heart) down the middle.  'Sim' in durians, is a hokkien (chinese dialect) word, describing a hollow area down the middle of the fruit.  It is usually creamy yellow and has rough surface (as if, pimples).

Typically

The shell (inside) is usually clean white in color.  The durian flesh are not huge, usually a small row as seen above.  I like to call it, 'dog shit' (as it is a rather thin row, of many pieces).  Color of flesh is creamy with some 'blue-black' bruised shades.

Expect it to weight around 1.5kg.

Texture, Taste, Aroma (Flesh)
The flesh is usually very thick, kind of, stick to the throat feeling.  Seeds are small!  So yes, you get more for the bang (except the slightly thick shell).

This durian has a decent character, but it tends to be bitter sweet (7:3 ratio) region but can also be more on the sweet side sometimes.

Choosing

Check the appearance.  It odd to be slightly longish shape with a narrower top, bigger body/bottom.

Personally

I prefers, this durian is good enough but if you let me choose a few other varieties, I likely give this a miss.  Maybe I had too much of this last time.  Tai Yuen suits consumers who don't want it too strong, prefers a good balance in bitter/sweet taste.

I give this a 6.5/10 rating.

Tai Yuen (whole fruit).  It has a narrower top, bigger bottom.

Tai Yuen (Inside).  White shell (inside), thick flesh, small seeds.
