This is like letting the cat out of the bag. I feel so bad doing it, but on the other hand, I think it also helps consumers see it from another side. Maybe even prefers them doing it.
Ever saw sellers hitting the durian hard, or even banging it on the ground? Ever wonder why?
Malaysia durians drops from tree, quite a height, and hits the ground. This may have resulted in soft durian flesh. Thailand durians are harvest, so there is no heavy bump on the ground, thus flesh may be less soft.
For that suspicion, it may have been the exact reason why sellers will hit the durian, to let the flesh soften a little bit, so that it feels nicer in the mouth. But not all Thai durians are knocked/bump here.
So yes, I will prefer them to 'wack' my durian sometimes.
Well... it is also like, why cooks hammers certain meat. The 'hammering' helps to produce less tough meat don't it? If the meat is not 'hammered', most likely, the texture will end up being tough.
