Injection, Contains A Lot Of Chemicals, Poisonous

This topic gain an audience probably due to the recent rumour about a batch of 20 containers being rejected by China and ended up in Singapore thus the cheaper durians this season.

I've written a new post on this topic.

-------------------------------------

Have you ever hear people saying :
1.  Durians are injected with chemicals, thus some varieties are so fleshy, very strong tasting, bitter or sweet, etc etc?

2.  Durians contains a lot of chemicals?

3.  Too much durian is poisonous?

Myths!  Don't know who started it, but do not believe in hearsay.  I can also say, Pee under the durian tree, the durian will end up smelling/tasting like pee.  Myth!  Stop believing in these nor even asking the durian seller (some may mock at you).

Myth buster!
Durians and the tree, are not injected.  How do we inject durian or trees?  Drill a hole?  Anything 'fed' to the durian tree, will be better absorbed through its roots.  Let me explain further.

Fertilizers

Durian trees are fertilized sufficiently (I won't say intensively nor scatteredly, thus, sufficiently, the in-between).

Durian trees are like women (in a sense).  After a season (after all durian fruits have fallen), the tree needs to be nursed back to health with a lot of nutrition.  This part is like a woman whom have just delivered a baby, she needs to be nursed during her confinement month, to have her health restored.  So durian trees needs some pampering.  Without which, the durian tree becomes weak.  It may start falling sick or not be able to produce good durians.

Fertilizers (nutrition) are scattered onto the ground.  Rain water dissolve the fertilizers and are absorbed by the roots, fed to the tree.

Pesticides
Pesticides are not, injected.  It is sprayed upwards from ground level.  Pesticides are only sprayed after the flowers became tiny durians.  Pesticides are continually sprayed on a bi-weekly basis, till the durian is ripe (first falling).  The last 2 weeks are usually pesticide free.

Most durians from the tree will fall over a span of 2 weeks, thus spraying more pesticides is a waste.

Poison (from Pesticides)
Oh yes, those who says durians are poisonous due to the pesticides, are eating durian shells!  I can't help but laugh when I hear this!

Please, if you believe in this, hear me... "Do not eat vegetables and all other fruits"!

Facts!  Pesticides are sprayed and spread onto the shell.  The shell is usually very thick.  How does pesticides gets into the fruit/flesh?  Do you know, eating vegetables and fruits with skin, expose us to more pesticide consumption than it is ever possible from durian?

Fruits are scary you know?  Worst for thin skin fruits (eg berries), as insects are more prone to attack it!  So a lot more pesticides could be present and we don't skin these fruits do we?  Next, a lot of fruits are waxed (are you not aware of this?) before packing and shipping.  The wax seals pesticides to the skin, and we consume it!  SCARY you know!

So, which is more poisonous?  You got the answer.

I don't mind eating durians for you.  You pay, I eat.

  1. Hi,I love the name and content of your site! You are quite obviously a durian lover :) I have to say though that I disagree with you about whether or not durian trees are injected. The trees are sometimes injected to prevent phytophtora or durian stem and trunk borers.

  2. If I get a chance to speak with a plantation guy or people that worked in plantation, I'll try and sniff out some info on this injection part. However, even if trees are injected to some extend, I believe it is harmless to us. There are many myths and hearsay and more people believes in it than real info.
